What is your opinion on naming a baby boy Atreyu? And what comes to mind when you hear that name?

If my fiance` and I have a baby boy we are going to name it Atreyu after the character in The Never Ending Story, NOT the band. I just want to hear some other peoples opinions?

What is your opinion on naming a baby boy Atreyu? And what comes to mind when you hear that name?
I love the name and first thought when I heard it was the movie. Definitly a good name for a boy that will one day be a man.
Reply:I wouldn't do it. It is a little too out there for me. Sounds more like a noise you make when you sneeze than a name for a baby!!!! Sorry!
Reply:That's GREAT! For me, Atreyu is a pretty heroic (and handsome, as I picture him) so it's a great name. PLUS! It dosen't sound bad, and its unique. Just don't change the name to "bastian balthazar bux" anytime soon... and just hope that the child wouldn't become a greenskin (you know, the olive skin and blue hair people...aka Atreyu's nationality...)
Reply:Use it as a middle name not a first name... Children are cruel by nature and with a name like Atreyu you will be painting a huge target on your child...

Think of all the jokes and such you can an imagine those being said to your child by his peers.... Now doesn't a more common first name to go with Atreyu as a middle name sound good???
Reply:The first thing that I thought of was the neverending story. But listen, it is totally up to you. Every name has something tied to it. One of mine is named Mary- so people love to sing to her "Mary had a little lamb" and of course "Mary Mary quite contrary" fits her perfectly. You name your baby what is in your heart.
Reply:I think it's a unique name. I personally like it as a middle name though. I don't know why it struck me that it'd be good if it has a beginning and the end (I know it's totally against the never ending story idea).

What comes to my mind was some fantasy science fiction kind of creature like dragon or unicorn.
Reply:I think that it is a unique name. If you dont want your kid growing up with everyone around him having the same name, your are chosing the right one. When I first saw the name I thought of "The Neverending Story"?
Reply:Having seen the movie a thousand times I immediately thought of that. It is not a bad name or anything, but there will be few ways to change it up a bit. For example Robert, Rob, Bob, Bobby. Well I guess there is Trey? Just something to think about. Hubby and I are expecting a boy too and we changed our minds a bunch of times when we realized some of the names we liked did not have many options. Dont listen to people saying your kid will hate you for it. Everyones name is teasable to a certain extent. If both of you like the name then go for it. Think of some of the names celebrities are naming their kids. Coco? Apple? Give me a break. I would rather be named Atreyu then Apple any day.
Reply:I don't like the name... can't quite figure out what it says to me... except it screams: "strange, made up, weird". Unless he'll be surrounded by others with the same kinda theme... I wouldn't subject him to it. He'll have a hell of a time getting people to pronounce it correctly... let alone spell it off the top of their heads. Unless you were a celebrity, artist, or on the Forbes richest people, you'll just be looked upon as being weird.

I'm not being mean... just expressing my opinion.
Reply:I like it. I think it's nice. It brings back those childhood memories of watching The Neverending Story. He might be teased in school, though. Little kids can be mean. My fiance and I want to name our baby, if it's a boy, Anakin. We can already see that he would be called Darth, but we decided to give him a middle name that is more common so he can either go by it or shorten his name to just initials, like A.J. Do what you think is right, but I really like the name Atreyu.
Reply:Do you really want your child to grow up and hate you??? Might be good for a middle name though.
Reply:Don't do it!

Why do people insist on having original names for their kids?

I can remember being a kid and being upset that nothing had my name on it. My brother and sister had liscense plates on their bikes. I couldn't have one because they don't make my name. I never got the pencils with my name on them. It seems crazy to be upset about that but when you are a kid thats important stuff. Before I had my son I made sure I could buy a liscense plate with his name on it. I wasn't having my kid go through that.

I just read an article in the paper about people with different names having a hard time getting a job. That could be true. I was the person that read resumes at my job. If I couldn't pronounce the name I wasn't calling for an interview. Sure they may have been plenty of qualified but there was always someone that had a easier name.
Reply:even before i finished reading you question i thought about the neverending story...name is cute but i would try a different spelling the name today are killing the english language lol in 50 years from now we are going to have all the middle ager that have weird spelling names lol
Reply:The movie was the first thing i thought of.

I kinda like it :)

I think it is one of those name that kinda grows on you

congrats
Reply:I like the name because it's different. The first thing that came to my mind was the movie "Over Board" with Kert Russell and Goldie Hawn. The "Never Ending Story" was next. I think that something like Atreyu James, and call him A.J. If you don't like this then maybe you could use Atreyu as his middle name. You need to try it with the last name he is going to have to see how it really sounds. Ether way I really do like the name.
Reply:Well the band named themselves after the character so it would in an indirect way would be naming him after the band.
Reply:Please think of another name. Your son will thank you for it later.
Reply:As a child of the '80's I immediately thought of the movie.
Reply:Why doesn't anyone name their children normally anymore????

That is a ridiculous name and your child will be constantly asked how to spell it, pronounce it and what it means.

Please don't inflict that name on your beautiful baby boy!
Reply:Ah, NO! All I think of is the big fuzzy white dragon/dog thing!

Not the child who had a brave heart!

Then I put the voice of the dog from the 60"s religious show, Davie and Goliath, I put Goliath's voice in my head, added to the picture of the Dragon Dog/NO!

YES, I LOVED the movie and now with my 8 and 6 and new born grandson will sit and watch it over and over, along with Shrek, and Short Circuit, and Fern Gully, But no, I would not name my child that name.
Reply:I don't care for it, it sounds like a sneeze.
Reply:I think it's very, very cheesy and tacky.
Reply:As soon as I read the name I thought of the Never Ending Story!! I loved that movie....I think it's a great name and people can always call him Trey for short or as a nickname. When I picked my boys' names I looked for names that could have nicknames. My oldest is Danny Jr, we call him DJ. My middle is James and we call him Jamesy. My youngest is Johnathan and we call him John John. They love it because they have school names and at home names.
Reply:I immediately thought of The Never Ending Story, before I even read further than the name. I think it's a wonderful name, but my fiance would never go for it. We named our boy Eian.
Reply:Its a unique name. It really shouldn't matter what other people think of the name as long as you are happy with it. I named my daughter Makeela which is a combo of 2 names. I wanted a name that everyone else wouldn't have when she starts going to school.
Reply:I feel sorry for your kid. He / She didn't have any choice in having some inconsiderate wackos for parents.
Reply:I love that name!!! It reminds me of the band
Reply:I doubt he would ever forgive you. It'd be like the boy named Sue - get tough or die.
Reply:4 some reason, I think of an Anime character with crazy hair
Reply:First thing that comes to mind is.... I'm up a tree! You? That said I loved the neverending story as a child and still love it now. I always say when naming a child, think of something that is a reflection of you. Example one of my daughter's names is Devin Melody Star Melody for my love of music and Star because you should always dream as high as the stars. If this is a special thing to you, then do it!
Reply:I think that is a different and unique name....you won't have to worry about him going by "Atreyu S." in school...I doubt you will find anyone else by that name. I say..do it if you and your man like that name. Forget about what other people think. The real test is to go outside and yell the name real loud 3 times. That's how you will know if you like the sound of it. I think of Atreyu the warrior..of the Plains People..from "Neverending Story"...when I hear it...and also I think of a child with a strong will and a never-give-up attitude with strength to match. Have you come up with a middle name yet?? You might want to see how that would sound with it.... Happy parenting....

As somebody who was hung with an awful name at birth, I hope they won't do this. I went through years of people making fun of it until I had it legally changed.

It was a big hassle, cost a couple of hundred dollars, and I had to be fingerprinted like a common criminal, but it was worth it. Nobody can ever call me that again.

If Golda fits with your ethnicity, they could name her Golda Cassandra and then give her the nickname Goldie Cash. (Still wouldn't be my favorite.) Diamond, as a 3rd name, won't show up on anything except the birth certirficate and possibly legal documents.

Name the property of real numbers illustrated below. Be specific with the naming (include “of addition” or “of multiplication,” if applicable).

(-9)(8) = (8)(-9)

I never did this before so Im guessing

(-9) would be a higher value=-negative 9? base on the real number line- I have no clue ?

Name the property of real numbers illustrated below. Be specific with the naming (include “of addition” or
This is called the "Commutative property of multiplication".

You can remember this because

1)it is multiplication

2) when you commute, you go from home to work and then work to home. When you look at the problem it looks like home to work=work to home.

All this property is saying is that you can change the order of the numbers when you multiply and it doesn't change the outcome. -9 time 8 is the same thing as 8 times -9.

The same is true when we commute to work. The distance is the same even though we have chaned the direction in which we are traveling.

I hope that helps you remember. If you would like clues to help you remember the other properties, just ask.
Reply:Commutative Property of Multiplaction

It means you can rearrange the terms and the answer will remain the same.

Example:

A x B = B x A

Can someone give me a good name for my Fashion label,I think naming it after myself is a bit plain any ideas ?
Name it after the inspiration for your clothes. For example, say I was inspired by a pretty spring day in the countryside. I'd call my line "Jolie Printemps" (pretty spring in French).

Or maybe I was inspired by something very English-feminine - I'd call it "Tea Time".

You can always add your name on the end, too: "Tea Time by ________ ".

Have fun with naming your label.

Does anyone regret naming their child a certain name because it became too common?

I don't know if I'd use the word regret but I wish it weren't as common now as it is. We named my daughter Michaela..her dad and I knew one person with that name and that was it all our lives and now it's freakin everywhere. My son's name is Greyson..again hubby and I knew one person (same guy) but spelled with an A. And now we hear it everywhere we go...matter of fact baby in the NICU next to my son was also named Grayson. Now the new neighbors one son...go figure. To make matters worse it's becoming more common as a girls name...

Does anyone regret naming their child a certain name because it became too common?
Probably. I know some people had the brilliant idea to name their child "Unique" and then found out there were two other girls in her grade with that name along with a So'unique.

If it was a name like Alex or James that was too common, I wouldn't probably mind. If it was one of those intentionally misspelled name that was supposed to be creative and special, it'd be embarrassing. I don't have kids though.
Reply:No, but I regret letting my family talk me out of using the less common name as his first name instead of his middle name.
Reply:nope i picked what i liked and could care less who else has that name.
Reply:I named my 2 1/2 year old son Aidan after seeing the name on a baby list online, falling in love with it, and never actually hearing the name used elsewhere.

Now, we go to the doctor and when they call his name 3 boys stand up, LOL. As much as I don't care for common names, I don't regret it, it suits him.

It's funny b/c if our baby is a boy, we will probably end up naming him Connor. Another common name... BUT, what goes better with Aidan?!!
Reply:The last thing i wanted was to have my child be one in a sea of kids with the same name. to this day people i knew in grade school use either my first and last name or my last initial all the time. and there were only two of us!

personally I dont care for the names Kaden and Aiden and Braiden and all the other rhyming names, they seem too trendy for my taste. And everybody is going old fashioned for girls names now. So i flipped it and went old school with my boy, I named him Victor James. The doctors said he's the only Victor they know, and I like that. If the name becomes popular I'll get really annoyed because it will be like " I DID IT FIRST! KNOCK IT OFF!!!" haha. but what can you do. I wanted to name him Edsel, but the grandmas wouldnt let us. but Victor suits him well so I'm glad i named him that.
Reply:Nope. Only because my mother named me Amanda when it was the 3rd most popular name in the US, so I now obsessively check ssa.gov/babynames and refuse to use anything in the top 20.
Reply:Haven't had my baby yet but I'm scared of that happening. Right now I'm thinking Conner, Noah, or Brody. Middle name has to be Eric after his daddy. I guess after the fact there is nothing you can do and its their name even if its someone else's too.I was one of five Amanda's in my high school class and we only had a graduating class of 32, i know how frustrating it can be.
Reply:Yes! and No! I have an Alexis and Dylan. They always have at least 2 other kids in their class with the same name.
Reply:My name and my partners names are rare. I mean, if I told you, you would say, "your right, never heard of that." so for us, we really WANTED a traditional name. I did look up the social security website to see the top 100 names in the US for any given year and we picked one that was #62....I am very glad nobody ever says "what?" when I tell them her name, (which was always done to me.)
Reply:my neice Monica was born in 1995, and my sister in law was upset that Monica Lewinski's name was Monica, since it was big news at the time and was such a sleazy story.
Reply:i don't have kids but i doubt my mom gave us names that became too common. It goes conor, kirby, and wyatt. And I like that my name(kirby) isn't common.
Reply:I regret how I spelt my daughters name, not what I named her. her name is Makenzye and I loved it when I saw it somewhere....until I learned that EVERYONE would spell it wrong.
Reply:Definitely!
Reply:I haven't had children yet, but I have a list and any name that's on the top 1000 names list on the social security website doesn't make the cut....

A friend of mine named her daughter Madison 16 years ago.... now her daughter gets irritated hearing a bunch of 6-8 year olds getting talked to at the mall..... But even back then, the name Madison was at about 150-200 on the SS website... that's why I will choose something that's not even on the radar. I don't tell people what names I even like, and if I do on the rare occasion tell someone a name I like, I hope they have a negative reaction - that way I know they won't use the name themselves.
Reply:I named my babies Nina, Anna, Kate, Kali (Kay-lee), and Sara, and I occasionally think I should have named them differently.
Reply:I haven't had any kids yet but I am mad that the one I had loved for years (Aiden) has become so popular. My second choice after that had been Braden but of course that became popular too! Oh well.
Reply:I don't know if I regret it but it does bother me occasionally. We named our daughter Abigail back when it wasn't as popular and now that it's more popular, there a just a million of them out there!
Reply:I named my daughter Elizabeth Kylie- Elizabeth after my mother, Kylie after a friend. I don't regret naming Lizzie that at all- it may be a common name, but it has real meaning behind it. Also, I can't imagine calling her anything but Lizzie!
Reply:not yet. but i almost did.

which is kinda why i like to keep my child's name/sex reserved until birth, b/c i feel like someone's going to steal my idea (lol)

i wanted to have a girl - and the name that i thought of, i didn't tell anybody (except for my husband). and just as soon as my son was born, i kept hearing all over - the girl name that i was going to give my daughter. it was like, every where i went, i heard that name. (lol)

i'm glad i had a boy!

God Bless.
Reply:Sort of. When I was pregnant with my daughter I knew that I wanted to name her Maia. I'd had the name in my head for years and couldn't imagine naming her anything else. I thought it was a beautiful name, simple and somewhat unique; also it has a Hebrew origin and my husband is Jewish. She was born 6 years ago, and it seems like since then, every other little girl we see is called Maya (usually it's spelled differently at least!). I still love the name and it suits her but it does irritate me when we go to the playground or the store and I hear parents yelling the name!
Reply:I don't regret naming my kid anything, cause I'm only 16 so I have no kids.

But I regret that my mom named me Rachel. It's not a bad name, but SO many people have it. So people call out "RACHEL!" and I answer and they give me nasty looks and say "UCK! Not YOU" It's annoying...and kinda mean. That's why I go by Rae most of the time.
Reply:If you are so unhappy that you would like to change their name but they are too old to do so or you still love their name then you could either call them an origional nickname eg. Belle/Bella from Isabella, Lottie from Charlotte, Zac from Isaac or you could call them by their middle name or a nickname from their middle name eg. ____ Rose (Rosie) or _____ Grace (Gracie).

However, if you love their name it shouldn't matter how many people have it. It means that you must have great taste!
Reply:Yes! I just hate how every little boy is named Marcoantoniolissimaximo.

Would the meaning of the name put you off of naming your baby?

For example, I really liked the name Mallory. It's a pretty name but it means unlucky.

Would the meaning of the name put you off of naming your baby?
"The meaning of baby names can be a major reason for parents to select a specific name for their baby. It is often a belief that the meaning of a name can instill certain characteristics or attributes that is the deciding factor in a baby鈥檚 name..."

Mallory is a calm and soothing name. You evidently found the French meaning of the name. However, the German meaning of the name means "army counselor". That is a name that speaks of wisdom and strength.

"Army" implies strength and power, which can be a good thing for a girl in this day and age.

"Counselor" implies wisdom and intelligence. What more could you ask for your daughter?

Naming a child is a big responsibility and not something to be taken lightly. We've all known kids in school who were teased for their name or even the meaning of their initials.

But when it comes down to it, you have to name your child something that you like. After all, it's pretty much guaranteed you will be whispering, singing, crying and yelling that name quite a bit over the next 18 years. So it better be something that you can say easily and like the sound of when you say it.

Congratulations and don't let others tell you they don't like the name. So what? Remember, you, your baby and what you want to impart or speak into you baby's future is really what matters. Not the opinions of strangers. Not even mine.
Reply:Yes my whole life I have loved the name Caleb. I have read that it means anger like a dog and on other sites it say forceful like a dog. My husband just can't get past the meaning and refuses to name our child Caleb. :( such a pretty name such a bad meaning.

Maybe you could go with Mallie or something close but not quite the same?

i remember having to do a report in school where we had to find the meanings of our first, middle, and last name and its origin and I was proud that my name meant "beloved" It would have been weird but not devastating to have said "unlucky".

Oh and my mother's real name is Dolores and it means "sorrow" my mom hated the meaning so much she changed it to her middle name "kay" in the third grade.
Reply:No not really but if it was a really horrible meaning like ugly or stupid I wouldn't use it. I like the name Marie and the meaning is bitter, it's pretty harsh but I still might use it as a middle name for my daughter. I like Scarlett Marie, Lillian Marie, Layla Marie or Ava Marie x
Reply:If I liked the name, I would do it. My parents loved the name Chelsea and named my sister it without knowing it meant "Port of Ships." My name means "Olive Tree." It's not the name will make her unlucky.
Reply:Mallory sounds like a mallard duck. Or someone with frizzy hair. Oh my, that is unlucky! I guess I don't have much room to talk, though. I'm planning on Carter if I have a boy, which means something like driver of a cart.
Reply:it may or may not really matter to you, but would you like to grow up with your name meaning unlucky? the meaning of my name is really important to me, so i would pick something else - it would make a good middle name though
Reply:Yeah. I really liked the name Legion for a boy but my mom advised me that in the Bible there's a passage that talks about "Legion of Demons". So that turned me off..l
Reply:No, it's not as if the meaning has any jurisdiction over how your child will turn out!

I think Mallory is beautiful! I would still use it, if I were you!

:)
Reply:Well, yes. I would be put off by that....for example, Seth is a popular name but it's actually the name of an evil mythological villain.....idk....
Reply:No. I never look at the names meaning.

I dont know the meaning of my own name.
Reply:no i dont think it really matters. Mallory is a beautiful name.
Reply:no. but mallory is an ugly name so don't go with that.
Reply:No I wouldn't let it affect my decision. Best wishes ;)
Reply:no, most ppl dont know what they mean anyway
Reply:no dont listen t people who say that stuff

I'm getting a female shih tzu and was thinking of naming her a Chinese name.?

I don't know any names in chinese and wouldn't know how to pronounce the voul sounds. I would like to know if anyone has any cute chinese name ideas?I would like to name her Lily. How would that translate?

Thanks

I'm getting a female shih tzu and was thinking of naming her a Chinese name.?
If it's pronounced right, "li" in Chinese means "beautiful." (Chinese has different tones, so saying something with rising vs falling intonation, for example, changes the meaning. But it sounds weird if you do that in English, so just pronounce it the way you'd say the name "Lee.") So, Li-li would be a name with a nice meaning.
Reply:say it: gong shuoan. it is the closes to lily. it is lily flowers
Reply:I think Lily is a great name. Leave it that way.

Naming a girl a boys name and vice versa?

My friend's daughter (who is a weirdo to begin with,) just named her baby girl a boys name. I told my friend, why doesn't she talk to her and try to dissuade her from doing that. Not only is the baby unattractive like her mom (poor kid,) but now she'll grow up being teased about her name. How can someone do this to a kid? It reminds me of the old Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue." Feedback appreciated.

Naming a girl a boys name and vice versa?
I absolutely hate when people give their son a girls name (i.e. Ashley). You're just asking for him to get teased his whole life. Although I don't mind some of the boy names given to girls - like Ryan or Jayden. I guess its kind of a double standard.
Reply:lol good song

but what did she name her because a lot of girls are getting boy names now, so being named Jordyn or Dylan isn't abnormal

I like Noa , which is a girls name! Noah is a boys name, Noa is a girls its Japaneses, and its in the bible as a girl name too, aside from noah's ark.
Reply:I like certain boy names given to girls,

but I have yet to hear a girls name given

to a boy and like it...
Reply:I don't know whats the name?

some names are for either like Jordan.

and I saw a lady the other day who

has a daughter Spencer.
Reply:Don't be so sure.

Lots of traditionally boys' names have been adopted for use as girls' names, and not just in recent years. Ashley was once a masculine moniker, but it has long since become a widely accepted girl's name. The same thing is happening for Aubrey and Avery ... and there are 25 more letters in the alphabet!

That said, it seems harder for a boy to have a feminine name than for a girl to have a boyish one. If she'd name her son Betsey or Jennifer, maybe it would be cause for concern. But if she named her little girl Lyle? That's probably just fine.

Frankly, I think you're quite cruel to dismiss your friend's child as a wierdo and your friend's grandchild as unattractive. And perhaps she's not interfering with the child's name because a) the ink is already dry on the birth certificate, so why argue now and b) she prioritizes her relationship with her family above being right.
Reply:i know a girl named darian and no one makes fun of her.

quite frankly shes hott
Reply:Feedback? No problem. You're rude!

But seriously, why do you care so much what she names her baby? It's her baby and her choice. I know a girl named Brandon, a few Caseys, and Corys... There is nothing that says you HAVE you use a gender specific name for your kids.
Reply:What was the name? There are lots of boys names that are used as girls names. And how can you say that a baby is unattractive? All babies are cute!!
Reply:It is very rude of u to insult a friend's daughter, however it is wierd. If she really wants a name like that she should choose ones for both genders

Casey

Brook

Drew etc...
Reply:Well, depending on the name there may be a girls way to spell it. like adding an "a" at the end. good luck
Reply:Well it is her child so in the end it was her choice but it depends on the name given to either a boy or a girl. Some aren't so bad others are kind of scary.
Reply:It really depends on what the actual name is.

Like I like the name Peta for a girl and have known boys named Ashley. None of the people I've known with names of the opposite sex were teased.

When I was little my Mum had friends and they had named their daughter Sam and their son Shannon or something. Now we all thought that was weird. But they were their names and they suited them.

So i really depends on what the name actually is.
Reply:Wow, if this woman is your friend, you're not a very kind friend, calling her ugly and weird.

It depends on the name. Names like Jordan, Avery, Harper, Aiden, Sam, Brett, and Taylor are all acceptable names for both genders. Then, there are names like Thomas, George, Matthew, and Joseph that are very clearly boy's names, not a girl's. So, it all depends on what the name is. You could just be old-fashioned and rude. That's my vote.
Reply:You know what? I actually know some guys named Sue. Perhaps your friends daughter wanted a baby boy instead? I know of a family who, after 5 boys, named their 6th son a girls name because they really wanted a girl.
Reply:what did she name him?

its really wierd you get so many little kids with names that should be for the opposite sex

kung fu school

Have you ever liked a name for your future child that you ended up naming a family pet?

Have you ever liked a name for your future child that you ended up naming a family pet? I have done this twice. Once for my cat then again when I adopted my second dog. They are family so it's great. I talk to them like my babies anyway.

Have you ever liked a name for your future child that you ended up naming a family pet?
i have tons of favorite names that i never used for babies. i have 4 kids.

i have 4 dogs, among other pets. i tend to use my favorite names that my hubby didn't agree on for our children to use for pet names.

some of my favs that i am saving are:

Henry

Lucas

and William

my youngest son was almost a Lucas, but my hubby really hated it. i put up a good fight till we finally compromised.

i can even see the breed of dog that would match these names LOL

Lucas would be for a Bichon Frise

Henry would be for a Pug

and William for an English Bulldog.

I'm nuts i know! but I'm done having babies, so making lists of pet names is my new favorite thing to do. LOL
Reply:Yes, my husband and I named our first pup Sophie, which is a name I had always liked. Then we adopted another pup that was already named Sampson (but we call him Sammy) which is another name I had considered. But the names fit our pups well, so its not so bad.
Reply:If I was having a girl I wanted to name her Emily Claire. When I found out I was having a boy, I adopted a black lab and named her Emma.
Reply:We have a dog called Tia who we call Tea.. We want to name our baby Teagan..
Reply:No but funny because my mother has 9 dogs and 5 rabbits and I told her she couldn't use the following name because I want those names for my kids... we had to reserve them so they won't be used as pet names.
Reply:no, but my brother and his wife were talking about baby names before they had a daughter and liked the name jasmine, but got a dog shortly after and named the dog that instead. when they did get a daughter they named her selena
Reply:I've had the same favourite girls name for the past seven years. I recently named a new pet it but would still consider using this name on a future child
Reply:Yes....Kind of....I am 43 and WON'T have anymore....lol....I have a son, Justin Karl (25) and a daughter, Kaylee Ann Lacy (14)....I love the name Lexi so I named one of my dogs that....
Reply:Yes, I named my cat Emma, and found I was pregnant 4 months later.

I had a son luckily, but was devastated I wouldn't be able to use my favorite name!!!
Reply:Yes, my husband and I named our dog Titus which is a family name on my side..we had talked about naming a future (human) child that..but now it's taken :-)
Reply:Yes! I name my pets names that I love, but can't picture naming a child. Roxie is my dog right now. I love the name Roxie, but can't imagine a successful adult named that. Other names that are on the 'pet list' include Boudicca, Orion, Happens, and Zodiac.

ETA: I used to love the name Makenna, but I made the mistake of mentioning it to my mother, who promptly turned around and named her dog that.
Reply:No. The names I like for dogs are different than the names I like for kids. For example, my dogs are Toby and Lexi and my kids are Sierra and Cade. I would never pick Toby or Lexi for my child's name, but I love it for my pets.

I was just thinking of the name Antonio. What do you think of naming a boy that who is english, not italian?

I was thinking it may sound too pretentious of you're not of the right ethnicity. No good reason for asking, just popped into my head.

I was just thinking of the name Antonio. What do you think of naming a boy that who is english, not italian?
I understand that you aren't sure about using that name, but it really is a good one.

As people move all over the world, people hear new names and the lines between cultures soften. I think Antonio will do very well for an English man.
Reply:I thinks its fine - everyone knows how to say it and I have known black %26amp; hispanic Antonio's so I wouldnt worry about your child's ethnic background.
Reply:Hey, its your kid...Why should you worry what other people might think.

But anyways..Antonio sounds great!
Reply:if you're afraid of seeming pretentious, you could make it Anthony, but i really see nothing wrong with Antonio. Besides, he could end up going by Tony either way, anyhow.

PS Antonio Bandares isn't Italian. And if you do name your son/future son Antonio and people ask, you could just tell them you're a fan of Banderes, or something. But really, it should need no explanation. It's a nice name, regardless of ethnicity.
Reply:i love the name Benjamin. I Wish i was named Benjamin.
Reply:I think Antonio is fine for a child who is english. My nephews name is Marcus Antonio after his father Antonio Marc and is also english.

good luck!
Reply:I think its fine to name outside of your ethnicity. I know that if I saw the name I would think of someone that was italian though. I children named stefano and efastino but they are very italian and there parents names are luiciana and salvatore. It's up to you though. Some other suggestions might be...

Reply:It's doesn't matter what they are. Antonio could be Italian or Latin.
Reply:It's a nice name, if you're Italian or not.
Reply:Anthony would be better, and either way he will be called Tony. ~
Reply:Try the name Harrison. It is a good english name. Remember when the child is in school or applying for a job that they will have a preconceived idea of that person based on their name before they even step foot in the place.
Reply:We are in the day and age where we cross the lines of what is proper for what nationality.

I think Antonnio is a fantastic name. If you can nick name him Anton or Tony.
Reply:Te he he .... Im Italian ....well Australian but parents are Italian ..... and i LOVE THAT NAME .... its a reallllly nice name for a little boy and for a grown man

dont worry about what any one thinks if you like the name GO for it .... also he can shorten his name to Tony when he grows up if he wishes ....

Go for it ... it is a very nice name
Reply:Hi! I'm Spanish. Although Antonio it's a quite common name in Spanish, I like that name a lot.

I dont' think you have to be Spanish or Italian to call your son like that. There are many people in Latin America who are actually Spanish and give their children English names.

If you like it, go for it!;)
Reply:I love Antonio. Break the stereotype!
Reply:I dnt like Antonio...in South America, it was used

alot back in the days..its a old name that reminds

me of the past, the poor people who were alot of

them named Antonio...dnt like it...try Anthony...

much much better.. ;)

When naming your child would you rather give them a common name or a very different or shall I say unique name

Im just wondering I personally dont care for all these wierd names Ive been hearing lately Its crazy what do you think?? Give your opinions thanks

When naming your child would you rather give them a common name or a very different or shall I say unique name
I like common names, personally because it's just easier for the child to grow up without being asked how to pronounce or spell it all their lives. It's possible to have a nice sounding name that's easy to say and spell without it being over the top.

Not to say that everyone should be naming their children, Bob and Joan, but there alot of nice common names out there that aren't too boring.
Reply:I'd like my child to have a name they won't run into on a daily basis. I'm sure there's about 3 Emily's or Hannah's in every class. I'd rather give my child a name that isn't on the top 10 or even the top 100 list.
Reply:Each one of my children have names that just seemed to fit them "in my eyes". My children names are:

Desiree (she is my first child and I "desired" her very much)

Danielle (I could not put down the book "Thurston's House" by DANIELLE Steele during my pregnancy I read it 3 1/2 times)

Khalil (because he was my first SURVIVING son and the name means "bright son")

Kevin (because he absolutely turned to look towards me when I said "Hi Kevin")

But then I named my granddaughter an UNIQUE name. I named her Miracle Danielle Khaleijua (because she is a miracle %26amp; her middle names represents a part of everyone in her immediate familial clique!!

But now it is no longer unique!! In her clinic there are now 6 Miracle's and 1 Khaleijua ~ all younger than her!!! LOL

So I think I prefer traditional names spiced up a little with uniqueness!!! Like instead of the naming her the traditional "Milagros/Milagras" I named my granddaughter it's English version "Miracle" and people melt over her name!!! And I simply put her aunt's name Danielle, followed by a combination of her uncle Khalil (Kha), her granddad Lei (lei) and her uncle Kevin's middle name Juan (jua) = Khaleijua

Her name means something to her!!
Reply:I dont prefer a certain group of names. I like names because of their flow and sound, not because of their origin or meaning.

Common names i like are Andrew, Blake, Georgia, Jessica and David.

My sons name is Kai, and we chose it because we loved it! Thats the only reason. We didnt do it to make him "unique", and as it turns out, we now know of 6 Kai's!!!

I really don't like it when people put down others for choosing different names, each to their own.
Reply:I was so glad growing up that I was not one of three Jen's or four Melissa's... or that I didn't have to make up a creative nickname to differentiate me from the others in the class with the same name.

I loved having a different name.

I plan on giving my children unique or uncommon names... however some of these new created names are just bizarre... as a teacher there are some that are just dumb.

What I do think is a bad idea are these "unique" spellings... taking a fairly common name like Kailey and having twelve ways to spell it.... the teacher always mispronounces it and it's always mispelled. Spelling something differently doesn't make the name unique, it still sounds the same.
Reply:I feel sorry for the kids that get the weird names as they are likely to be teased in school. Don't these parents ever think of that? or are they too busy trying to act like the celebrities?
Reply:I have a very common name - John - and I always hated it. BUT - in the age of the google, I reaaaly appreciate not being easily googlable.

There are plenty of really great, solid, common names out there - I'd go for common.
Reply:TO EACH hIS oWN.

weird would depend on your background. What may be weird to one, is great to theother. It depends on theindividual family. By all means do not name your own child a name you consider unacceptable, and respect those who name their children names that are pleasing to them.iF YOU GO THROUGH THE LABOR AND DELIVER THE CHILD, YOU GAIN THE RIGHT TO NAME HIM/HER.(Sorry caps not intended)
Reply:I gave my kids names I liked some are popular some aren't.

My girls are Jorden Rae %26amp; Emily Ann my boys are Dustin Michael - Thomas and Christopher Joseph.

My uncle has some origional names for his kids. Two of his daughters are Shanlyn and Chazlee. one boy is Sterling. I have always loved the two girls names different yet they sound really good.

One of my cousins has three kids two daughters and one son. They are the girls, Rain %26amp; Shade the boy is Gray winter sky or something like that they call him Gray. They wanted to name the third child River if it was a boy or a girl but changed their mind because the name wouldn't go with their last name.
Reply:I don't like the idea of naming a kid any of the "top 10 most popular names", but some of the names are getting a little "out there".

Naming kids nick-names is also wrong.

Example: If you like the name Kate, name her Kathrine so she can have more of a choice when she becomes, say, a Judge or a Doctor.
Reply:I think there's a happy medium.

Some unusual choices are still familiar and easy to pronounce. Older names like Silas, India, Jonah, Harriet, Claudia and hey ... Verity are often choices that are seldom heard but still comfortable. Some noun names - Journey, Story, Ever - and nature names - Bay, Ocean, Ruby - can be interesting and not too confusing, either. And while some Saints' names are obscure - Becan, Endellion, Leocadia - IMHO, if it's a Saint's name, it's fair game.

I do think that kreeatif spellings are a mistake. Emmeleigh is still Emily - a constant Top 10 name for the past decade. And Ryleigh, Maicee and so on are perfectly reasonable names that have been trashed.

Many names of recent coinage are also a little awkward. Yes, all names were invented at some point. But they were invented by talents like Shakespeare, and the authors of the Bible. Few of us can boast such literary can-do, and are best to stick with the myriad options provided by others.

I think it's nice to choose something that every kid in their class will have. The world really doesn't need another Emma.
Reply:it could be unique but nothing like shakita or taquita? cause it's ghetto and hood. exspecially if you dont live in the ghetto or hood
Reply:It is your wish
Reply:people dont like "original"names! You will have a bullied child who then has a crappy life beause they are never treated right
Reply:I like something common but not too common but not too wierd either.
Reply:personally i like older names that dont get used so often now, i dont like silly names, but i suppose the middle name if silly isnt so bad at least it doesnt get used as often. i feel sorry for some children, what were their parents thinking lol
Reply:I hate most of the trendy and really popular names, so I try for something more unique. I agree with you though. I hate those weird names too. What is with people naming their girl Nevaeh and their boy Jayden?! Those are HORRIBLE!!! Jayden and Nevaeh are not unique anymore. They're boring and just plain stupid.
Reply:You mentioned you like some unique names like Ava and Chloe???? Where do you get the idea either one of them is unique???

I just like names that are under the radar... nothing odd, nothing spelled weird, just not used to death. I'll always like the different names better than I'll ever care for Emily or Jake or Samantha....
Reply:I would pick somewhere in the middle - not super cmmon, but not smething off the wall either. And nothing with a wierd speling - enough with that!
Reply:I prefer unusual classic names, like Daphne and Theodore. They're familiar, but not overused at all. Also, Chloe and Jazlynn and Ava aren't unique. Chloe is a classic Greek name. Pretty, but not that uncommon. Jazlynn is also pretty common, but it's just made up and trendy. Ava is in the top ten! That said, I would prefer to hear Ava or Chloe than Jazlynn, simply because they have history behind them. I would prefer to hear a old-fashioned name on a child like Eleanor or Thomas than something like Shakoya or Trezarvious.
Reply:I went for different with my kids....Sierra and Cade....however now that I named them that I see a lot more kids with those names.
Reply:I don't want my kids to go to school and have several others in their class all with the same name as my child. Therefore I picked names which are uncommon but not unusual. Both my kids have surnames as first names. However I don't like weird names like Peaches Honeyblossom etc.
Reply:Unique names are great just as long as they don't sound funny. Wait until you have the child in your arms and then see what name suits it.
Reply:You can give them a unique name, which won't be unique soon...my child's name was unique when I gave it to her 23 years ago, and now it's considered rather common.

Stick with what YOU like, and what you think is appropriate for your child.
Reply:My kids are Joshua, Phoebe %26amp; Chloe. Not out there and not extremely common. (so far they don't have another kid in their classes with the same name).

Growing up I had a friend called Ria, (pronounced Rhy-ah) she always had to spell it and was always being mispronounced as Ree-ah it drove her insane.

I got caught out with the girls birthday party invitations. I knew all the kids names so wrote out the invites with "normal" spelling. I got several kids names wrong. Ashleigh (ashlea) Bailey (bayley) etc...
Reply:I prefer unusual names over boring popular names.
Reply:I think its personal choice but in saying that, I like it when someone names their baby something different. I don't like strange names like Tigerlily or anything but something not in the top 10. I'm from Australia and Chloe is in the top 10 for 2007.
Reply:Unique. But it depends...I have heard A LOT of interesting names...Someone named their kids Heaven and Star. lol I really like the name Trine though...(its mine. lol)
Reply:I love both unique and common name I already have name picked out for my kids both male and female and there both unique and common but the only problem with unique names is that some are just to unique and weird
Reply:I don't like names that are too plain but i also can't stand some of the really far out ones.
Reply:A memorable name, is not a common name :)

I personally think, that a different name is well remembered as opose to a normal name. Surely most people have normal names, but honestly how many John's do people meet in a lifetime? i've met at least 6, a unique name is beautiful.

Not only that, but think about what makes celebrities memorable? it's usually their names, and how unique they are. They don't have to be uncommon names, but a bit rare. I think a memorable name, is well appreciate it and complimented :)

I was thinking of naming my webkinz turtle Kiwi. Should it be a boy or a girl if i name it that?

P.S. i want it to be a boy. If u have better BOY names for a webkinz turtle please answer that instead.

How do you like the name "Ian"? We're naming our son and are considering this one.?

Ian is a variation of John (who would've thunk). John means "God has been gracious" which during labor and delivery may prove to be helpful if you do decide to go with this name. I think it's cute for a little boy and will become more sophisticated as he gets older. I say go for it.

I absolutely love it. There's a guy on my fav soap named that who's both strong, gentle %26amp; intelligent.

I also have a good friend named Ian that immigrated here from Ireland. He's good looking, has strength of character, hard worker, cares about others, intelligent. So I love the name.

But Zachary is a cool name too. It means the Lord hath remembered. It's my son's middle name. Ian Zachary doesn't that sound cool? lol!

Btw I didn't know. Congrats!!!

What's your opinion on naming your son/daughter the same name as your mother, father, etc?

What's your opinion on naming your son/daughter the same name as your mother, father, etc? I find it lazy and terrible. It lacks creativity.

What's your opinion on naming your son/daughter the same name as your mother, father, etc?
Sometimes it's tradition, and sometimes it's to honor the deceased.
Reply:in greece it's a tradition to name kids after their grandparents. It goes like that:

first son : father's father

second son : mother's father

first daughter : father's mother

second daughter : mother's mother

other child : parents choice

Not everyone does that but most families do. Some actually join the names of the two grandparents to one child.

btw in my family it goes through generations and all the males names are are the same from Grandad to grandson
Reply:It's tradition in many cultures. I'm of Irish descent and the common naming trend was/is (?)

first-born son: named for paternal grandfather

second-born son: named for maternal grandfather

first-born daughter: named for paternal grandmother

second-born daughter: named for maternal grandmother

subsequent children: named per parents' choice

Much of this has given way but the first-born son ritual is still viable. In my family, my grandmother was not close to her family and didn't want her 2nd son named for her father. By tradition, she was overruled. She never called my uncle by his given name but used a nn of her choice.

"...lazy and terrible. It lacks creativity."

NO, I feel you're wrong here. It's a tradition to honor the past, wonderful relatives, and such. It makes much more sense than being "creative" and "unique" and coming up with monstrosities as calling a child Feldspar or Phranque.
Reply:This happened twice on my dad's side of the family. It's a tradition. I actually find it rather innovative to name the daughter after the mother. You see dad and son having the same name often, but not mother/daughter. So, kudos to them.

I, personally, wouldn't name any of my children after me or the father. I am a baby name lover, and would want to pick out something new.

Another idea, which I have seen, is to use a variation of a name. Such as, a mom named Elizabeth uses Eliza for her daughter. And a dad named Alexander uses Xander for their son. I think this is pretty cool.
Reply:My father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather all have the same name. My great-grandfather was junior, grandfather was the III (3rd) and my dad is known as IV (4th). I think that is nice in a sense. The name is not a very common name either. Plus my dad, grandad, and great-grandpa were all in the military, so it shows a lineage in there. And since my dad is the only one alive now, it can honor my deceased relatives as well.

In general, I think it okay to name someone after a family member if it was tradition or if there is nicknames used for it. Like if you and your father were both named Joseph, your mom might call your dad Joe, and you Joey or just Joseph. Also if this has gone back for generations, like my family.

Another thing you could always do is change the name a little, to still honor a relative, but not copy their name, like how my mom was named, and how I have the same middle name as my mom and grandma. For example, if your grandmother's name is Kathryn, you could name your daughter Kaitlyn. Or if their name was Lucas, you could name your daughter, Lucille or Lucy. You can still honor a family member, just changing the name a little to make it different.

Hope this helps :D
Reply:In some cases it holds importance. My sister was named after my mom, but that was because she was born so early with so many complications no one thought she would live. They never really named her and the nurses just called her "little Mary" and my mom was "big Mary". The name stuck! My sister survived and to this day is still known as little Mary, lol.

When I was pregnant with my first we found out it was a BOY! From the start my husband was adamant he wanted his first son named after him. I was like, no way, I am not naming my son Alfred! He was so insistent and it was so important to him I finally gave in. To avoid confusion we call my son by his middle name Scott which apparently is pretty common. The name goes back for generations in my husbands family. I feel holding names in the family is actually important and holds great value, not lazy or terrible at all! For 4 generations on my side the middle name Noell has been used for girls and I used it for my second child, a girl. I get compliments all the time on how pretty it is!
Reply:Personally, I would rather give my child his or her own name so that they have their own identiy. I know a guy who was named after his father, but he was so much more like his mother (didn't look a thing like his dad) and he always felt that he didn't meet his father's expectations. BUT - it is also considered an honor to be named after a family member which the child could feel proud of.. so I see both sides.
Reply:Not nice.. happened to my mom.. but it was her stepmom who had the same name as my mom.. so my granddad called them by the same name and if he meant his wife he said.. xxx nr. 1 and xxx nr 2 if he meant my mom I find that horrible especially as my mom has a middle name.. he could have called her Joanna instead of by her first name which she shared with her stepmom.. her mom, Elizabeth Marie, had died at age 32 of pneumonia and her dad remarried after one year as he had 2 young children.. by coincidence his second wife had the same name as my mom.. but it's lousy to be called Nr. 1 and nr. 2 or Junior and senior for boys.. or ''Old man, and ''boy''

I think it's a little bit of arrogance if they voluntarily give the child the same name as the dad or the mom.. because they want their image to live on in their son or daughter instead of letting them be unique and individuals.. they can use their name as a middle name but i don't hold with naming a child after all the members of the family.. aunt cousins, MIL, grandmother.. that also gives the child no individulality. they can honor the dead by keeping them in their hearts and memory and the child can have an individual name. In the case of my mom.. it was unplanned and a coincidence that the stepma had the same name as my mom...and that her dad did not come up with calling one by the original name.. his wife and my mom Joanna.. that would have been better instead of calling them by numbers. Nr. 1 and Nr. 2.. Big xxx and little XXX..
Reply:I think you just trying to start arguments. I think it shows respect and that you want your child to have some of the same traits as your parents. When I have a girl her middle name is going to be the same as my mom's middle name and my middle name is the same as my grandma's middle name.
Reply:I think it's sweet to name your children after relatives for their middle names, I'm pregnant with triplets and the names I have right now are

Sophia Marie (Marie is after my grandmother)

Parker James (James is after my grandfather)

Connor Reid (Reid is after my husband's grandfather)
Reply:That depends on whether any family traditions exist. Some people are very strong on that stuff.

Our family made it a tradition to actually give a different name than any immediate family member.
Reply:Naming after parents or grandparents doesn't bother me too badly.

However, naming a child after yourself is one of my biggest pet peeves EVER!
Reply:a tribute if they are dead and atrocious if they are still alive.
Reply:Only for middle names.
Reply:I wouldn't do it myself, but it means alot or is tradition to some people

A name of a first born and naming rights?

Is the name Serrinaeh (Ser-ee-nay-ah) a good name to be given to a first born baby girl? Does the father have any say in giving naming rights in the traditional western civilisation sense?

A name of a first born and naming rights?
Shorten it and make 2 names out of it. Like Sereen Nayah.....

It would be best to talk it over with the father %26amp; reach an agreement that way. Also look at the meaning of the names you choose that way it is more meaningful to you.

I personally wouldn't pick a name like that for my daughter but this is you %26amp; hubbys decision.

Have fun!
Reply:You both should help pick out a good name. No that isn't a good name because no one will be able to figure out how to say it right. You want something that is easier to say and spell and read.
Reply:I would probably change it to Sarah. I don't like names that I can't even spell, much less the average other person. My ex husband thought he should get naming rights. Sorry... my Grandmother named the first child, which is a tradition in my family. The second one, I named. Yes I am selfish. I don't care. I told him to get over it. I did take into consideration what he wanted to name her and compromise. Somewhat.
Reply:Here in my community it is traditional for the parents to agree on a name.
Reply:Ithink Star would be a nicer name, and in the good ole' USA the father and mother usually come up with a name together, like he make choose the first and she the middle or vica versa!!
Reply:I would not go with the spelling you have chosen, but the name is great. The only reason I mention the spelling is that it will be very hard for your daughter to learn to spell it, and she will be given a very difficult time with it throughout life. I saw a 20-20 special that showed people with abnormal name spellings are less likely to be hired for a job, than those with regualr spellings. Even if they are more qualified for the job.

As to the father, most of the time both parents try to agree on a name. You wouldn't want to give your child a name that her father dislikes, and then is annoyed with you each time he says it.
Reply:Rights? Well, he certainly does have a say. My feeling is sense I carried this baby for nine months and will breastfed for at least a year I get veto power. So, yes I get more power in the process but he doesn't get shut out.

We sit and talk about our names and why we want to name our child that name. Usually our names are sentimental so it's very important to compromise.
Reply:The parents share the picking out of names. Both parents have "naming rights".

How do husbands feel on naming their child's middle name after one of the wifes parent?

I wouldn't mind. Especially if you are open to naming future kids one of my parents names. so you get one and i get one. type thing.

How do husbands feel on naming their child's middle name after one of the wifes parent?
Well I'm due to have a boy the first week of May. He'll actually have 2 middle names, Aage - after my husband's grandfather and Peter, which is the middle name of both my brother and my father.

So - no issues with names here!
Reply:Honey, ask your husband about how he feels regarding your child's middle name being that of your parents? He is your husband, thus you should be capable of asking him about anything. He will be truthful. Make it clear that he has a say in this naming process as well.
Reply:When we named our son we used a middle name from my husbands side of the family (for his grandfather) and one from my side (my deceased brother). My son's first name was his alone as no one in either side of the family has the name. He was totally fine with it. Our son's full name ended up being Spencer Charles Robert.
Reply:our twin boys will be Grayden Lee and Bryant Lewis. Grayden (Gary is my father in law) Lee (my dad and my father in laws middle name) Bryant (my husband is Brandt) Lewis (my moms brother who passed away) i know it isnt the same as my parent but my husband was thrilled to use the name Lewis after my uncle.

Jordan Aleksander as others have mentioned is cute and gives you the option of using his initials as a nickname as well--JAC--you know Jac Jac could be cute!

Some of these may be too out there for you:

Jordan Tyrone (JT is a cute option as well)

Jordan Jacobius

Jordan Mekell

Jordan Orion (well I just changed my mind about this one cause JOC as initials might lead to nicknames such as Jock Itch and Jock Strap.)

Jordan Andrique (pronounced On-dreek-ay) (JAC again)

Reply:Good name!

Reply:Personaly i think that the name is adorable, butr if in doubt here are a few tips for naming your child

Remember that names are for a lifetime

Most likely, your baby will wear the name you choose for life. Your child will be known on the playground, in an interview for a job and to future generations by the name you choose. Try to make sure it's a name that your child will happily accept as an expression of self and even take pride in. Don't choose a name that is so outlandish your child will be forever handicapped by it (or ultimately drop it) or a name that is so conventional that it fades dully into the background.

Choose a name that gives you a warm, comfortable feeling

Your baby deserves a name that conveys a positive, desirable value to you and to your child throughout life. Don't choose a name that you associate with stupidity, dullness or awkwardness. Avoid names that remind you of people you genuinely dislike. Instead, think of names that you associate with beauty, intelligence, affection, strength and energy. Also, think of names that readily bring to mind people whom you admire.

Be conscious of how the name sounds

In general, a child's name will sound better if the first name does not have the same number of syllables as the last name. Practice saying the first and last name aloud, as well as the first, middle and last name to find out how they sound together. Is the name easy to pronounce, or does it sound very awkward? Does it rhyme in a too-obvious way (Mary Berry, Bart Dart) or have a meaning that will provoke derision, such as the famous "Ima Hogg", "Hamm Bone" or "Jack Daniels"?

Avoid names with initials that spell out words

Would you name your baby Richard Alexander Thompson? Maybe, until you saw "RAT" on a monogrammed baby gift! How about Penny Ursula Smith (PUS)? Try to choose a name that doesn't spell out an unexpected word with an unpleasant connotation.

Think about nicknames

Are you prepared to hear your child called by a nickname? Andrew will inevitably become "Andy" some of the time, even if you insist on the formal name. If you like the potential nicknames associated with the name you choose, well and good. But if you have strong feelings against them, think about choosing another name with nicknames you like better or consider names without commonly used nicknames such as "Eric" or "Mary."

Should you honor a family member? It's your choice

If you genuinely like the idea of naming your baby after a family member, then by all means go ahead. But if you feel obligated to do so but secretly dislike the name. Maybe it sounds too old and tired to you or reminds you of someone you never liked. Then think of an alternative. Try using the family member's name as a middle name, then selecting one you favor more as your baby's first name. Or, you might prefer a variant or alternate spelling of the family name.

However, if neither of these alternatives will work for you, just remember it's your decision. No law says you have to choose a name you don't like just because it's been used before in your family. Perhaps it's time for a new name to be introduced.

Beyond the family: Consider other meaningful names

A name reflecting your own ethnicity or religion or that of your partner also can be a positive way to affirm the baby's heritage. Or perhaps you like the historical meaning of a name that springs from a language used by your ancestors.

However, you can also feel free to consider names from other traditions. If you really like the uniqueness of such a name, don't hold yourself back. There's one exception: When first names and last names are from very different origins, the result may be a peculiar-appearing combination, such as Guillermo Max Smith or Hayley Josefina Segelowsky.

Think twice before choosing a one-of-a-kind celebrity name

Throughout history, famous people have boosted the popularity of the names they bear. If you would like to name a child after a famous person you admire, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you avoid names that may conspicuously draw attention to the original, such as Cher, Elvis, Hamlet, Fred Flintstone and Bart Simpson.

Decide whether you like the idea of a popular name

You've always loved the name "Kaitlyn" until the day you realized it was the number one choice for girl babies throughout the country. Should you go ahead and use a popular name or even seek one out. Or should you choose a less well-known name?

The benefits of a popular name for a child are the familiarity and ease with which others will use a name they know and can recognize immediately. A child with a popular name may have a leg up on acceptance in the peer group and does not have to explain how to spell or pronounce the name. Your child also will always be able to find the right personalized pencil, key chain or cup in novelty stores.

One of the most common disadvantages of a popular name is rarely being in a group without four or five people who have the same name. Your name is not distinctive enough by itself; you have to have your last initial attached before people can distinguish you. And extremely trendy names may fall out of favor quickly.

People usually greet a less common first name, as long as it isn't too unique, with pleasure and interest. However, should you choose wisely and end up with the perfect name that is well-known and nice-sounding but not too popular or trendy, you may end up with an unexpected consequence: Never being able to find that personalized cup, pencil or key chain without ordering it from a catalog!

Try to anticipate spelling or pronunciation problems

If it weren't for people injecting a little creativity and originality in the process of choosing a name, we wouldn't have as many interesting variations as we have now. Names with less-common spellings or pronunciations should not be automatically disqualified. However, use common sense to spare your child frustration. A boy with the name of "Ian" in the United Kingdom may have no problem. But a boy in the United States may be forever correcting people over the phone that think they're hearing "Ann."

Go with your heart!

There are so many things to consider! When your baby is born, you realize it's all a matter of feeling, not logic. And your feelings and your partner's matter more than any opinion offered by friends or family. Stick with the name you genuinely love. And look forward to welcoming your child, its proud bearer.

Congratulations on the baby!

Should we consider our son's name when naming our daughter?

We have a son named Jonah and we are considering Nina Grace or Nina Lucille (Lucille after my Grandmother) for our second child. We like Nina because it means "beautiful eyes" in my husbands Indian/Hindu heritage. However, the -ah and -a endings are causing me to pause. I don't want people to think I tried to pick similar names...it just happens to be this way...Jonah and Nina.

Should I worry about this? Or am I overanalyzing?

Should we consider our son's name when naming our daughter?
yes you are over analyzing. The name is very pretty and it has nothing to do with your son. They will be in different classrooms and no one will relate one name to the other. Even if they were twins, I would not try to match the names.

NINA GRACE is pretty

good luck and congratulations
Reply:If this will help...after reading the first sentence of your question, I absolutely did not think that Jonah and Nina were similar. To me...Jonah ends like 'Uhhh' and Nina ends like "Ahhh". Nice names by the way.
Reply:don't worry about it, if you like the names use them ( they are beautiful names too). i shouldn't amtter what people think. they are your children.
Reply:I think once you have one child named, you tend to stick to sounds that you are comfortable with and in this case its 'ah' sound. I like 'z' sounds so my kids are Eliza and Isaac and I don't care if people think I did it deliberately, its just the sounds I love and its hard to come up with other names when you have your brain set a certain way!

I say go for it, Jonah and Nina only have the 'ah' in common and its not like your naming them Jonah and Jodie or Holly and Molly. Stop over analyzing and go for it!

Best of luck and congrats!
Reply:I would say forget what other people say. The only people whose opinions really matter is you and your husbands. If you like Nina, then name her Nina. It is your personal choice and you get to decide. So what if people say something? Just tell them that you like the name Nina, period. It is just a coincedence that it rhymes with Jonah a little bit. Oh, and I seem to be the opposite of everyone else here becuase I like both names but I like Nina Lucille better. It's pretty and it has a special meaning to you as well. Nina Grace is pretty also.

Reply:It would be too similar for me -- not simply a(h) endings for each, but both two syllables ending in the NA(H) sound. It does seem a bit forced ... though I realize that wasn't your intent.

What about a less-problematic alternative, such as Nila, Nisha or Purnima (shortened to Nima)?

Not horrible, of course, if you love Nina enough to get past the "Jonah and Nina" sound association, but definitely worth serious consideration.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I prefer Nina Lucille, for your grandmother, of the two combos mentioned. ;)

Also, I don't think I was clear above. I wouldn't avoid "Jonah and Nina" *just* because many will assume them intentionally matchy. I simply find it more complimentary when sibling names AREN'T overly similar ... not to mention less confusing and problematic in general, since it avoids the whole "Jinah/Nona" type mix-ups and "Did you call me (Nina) or him (Jonah)?" sort of hassles. It just helps when those living in the same household don't have names that happen to be eerily similar in sound, if that makes sense. Just a personal preference ... I'd never imply you shouldn't use a real, properly-spelled name only because someone *might* get the wrong idea about your reasons for choosing it. Just wanted to clarify. ;)
Reply:i didnt even notice that so i think your over analyzing
Reply:I think you're over analyzing, especially since they aren't twins, I think that names don't really rythme and it will be fine! Don't worry about it! Good Luck!
Reply:Yes, you should think about this..... You're not "over-analyzing" at all, and I really wish more parents would sit down and think out their children's names.

Personally, I don't care for the combination of Jonah and Nina, for several reasons aside from the identical sounding endings of each... but.. in the end you have to do what you want.
Reply:I think it is a great name. Go with what you like.
Reply:Way over analyzing. Jonah and Nina sounds cute.
Reply:You are overanalyzing. Personally, I wouldn't give two hoots about what "people think" unless those people are going to raise your baby! Otherwise, the choice of name and the reasons behind it are yours alone.
Reply:The names are nice - go with it!!!

Joy to you.
Reply:You are defiantly over analysing. I like Nina grace, but your grandmother would be over the moon if your daughter was named after her, so I;d go with Nina Lucille, which is very pretty/ Good luck.
Reply:I understand not wanting to match your children's names, but I really think that you have nothing to worry about.

Jonah and Nina sound nice together. And you could always call him Joe for short.

When pairing sibling names, it more important to me that they have the same feel to them. For example, Thomas and Sarah have the same feel but Kaylee and Barnaby do not. If names are too similar, like Kaylee and Bailey, then I think that is too much.

However, Jonah and Nina do not rhyme perfectly, so I think it is fine.

And I love Nina Grace, though the personal meaning of Lucille makes me love it more.
