Why did the Hollywood Ten take the Fifth Amendment and refuse to name names?

did they support communism or were they communist themselves?

Why did the Hollywood Ten take the Fifth Amendment and refuse to name names?
They were good Americans who didn't want to ruin people's lives based on their beliefs or alleged beliefs just to save their own skins.
Reply:Perhaps they were merely honourable people, who considered the HUAC to be an organisation that was wholly undemocratic and had no place in a mature democracy, and therefore refused to subject friends and colleagues to a "grilling" on matters of conscience.
Reply:They exercised their constitutional rights to defend others from a clearly unconstitutional, oppressive tribunal.

It doesn't really matter if they were communists or communist supporters in my opinion.
